ASSIGNMENT:
Objective of the activity:
The prime objective of this activity is to make the students understand about causes of
crisis; critical reasoning and impact of industrial crisis on country.
Learning outcome:
After this activity students will be able to:
a) Comprehend the concepts of causes of crisis
b) Gain knowledge about industrial crisis in Pakistan
Scenario
Pakistan is 10
th
largest country in terms of available human capital in the world. About
20.1% of labor force is involved in industrial development. Beta Corporation was a
garment factory located in Karachi that dealt with export of garments to Europe and the
United States. Almost 1,200 to 1,500 workers employed there, were earning between
5,000 to 10,000 rupees per month. On 2007, Securitycheck revealed deficiencies in fire
protection of the Karachi plant. On September 2012, Beta Corporation' factory caught
fire when a boiler exploded. Almost 300 to 400 workers were inside the factory when the
fire erupted. All the exit doors in the factory were locked and many of the windows of the
factory were covered with iron bars, which made it difficult for workers to escape and
consequently almost 289 people lost their lives and many of the deaths were caused by
suffocation. Mr. ABC, owner of the factory, claimed that company had implemented all
safety measures and the fire first broke out in the warehouse. He, himself, called the fire
brigade, which arrived about half an hour late. There was shortage of water supply in
Karachi at that time, resulting to make this crisis more horrible. Most renowned
personalities of the world condemned this incident and demanded fair investigation to
find out the actual culprits of this crisis.
Suppose, Govt. formed a committee to find out the causes of that crisis and appointed
you as the head of committee for answering the following questions;
1. Every crisis has certain critical determinants for its happening. Considering
above scenario, you are required to enlist factors that lead this crisis from a mild
happening to a disaster. (Marks = 4*2=8)
2. What measures you will suggest for preventing such kind of industrial crisis in
near future? (Marks = 7)
